Thursday, 7 April 2016

Thurs., Apr. 7th

You did it!!!  We have officially developed the language to discuss some of the human systems ... that was the whole point of section 1.  So now onto the digestive system where we revisit organic molecules (including polymers & monomers), membrane transport as well as enzymes ... lots of enzymes!
Emma embarrassed of this lab :)
Mary had saved her saliva all class until this point!!

Today:

When finished, start watching the first digestive system vodcast (see below).

Tuesday, 5 April 2016

Tues., Apr 5th

Unit 3 test corrections today and then review.  For a list of things you could use to review, see post and links from last Thursday (Mar 31st).

Section #1 Exam tomorrow!  You may want to arrive 15 minutes early to give yourself lots of time.

Monday, 4 April 2016

Mon., Apr. 4th

In general, this is how I feel about Monday's....
Unit 3 tests are marked and posted on the back wall (and can usually be found on this blog under marks I am having a system malfunction right now).  I am not going to email marks home until after the section exam as marks will then have been adjusted to show your increased learning (especially on unit 3 ... Yuck!).

Today students worked on doing corrections for unit 1 & unit 2 tests and then studied!  Reminder, your Section #1 Exam is on Wednesday (includes units 1, 2 and 3) and is worth at least 9% of your overall mark.  It may be valued at more if you beat your percentage on each of the unit tests thus far.

Fri., Apr 1st

Unit 3 Test today!

When finished, corrections for Unit 1 test.

Wednesday, 30 March 2016

Thurs., Mar 31st

Today:
...phones away today...
- complete lab & submit one per group
- Review for your Unit 3 test tomorrow
     - Options: watch animations, rewatch vodcasts, review online quizzes, workbook (answers here),  quizlet, jeopardy games (see Ms. Paas)

Wed., Mar 30th

Welcome back!  Hope you all have had a great break.

After we answered Carmen's phone call from 2 other students who were supposed to be in class, we completed today's check-in to remind us what enzymes were all about and then worked on a lab in an attempt to give an analogy to how enzymes function and what affects their reaction rates.  Lab questions are to be handed in tomorrow (there will be class time to work on them if needed).
Hwk: Review for unit 3 test

Tuesday, March 2nd

Good evening, everyone.

I am happy to say that I had the tests marked by the end of block 5 today :). You will know your marks tomorrow.

With Unit 2 wrapping up on Tuesday after the test, we are now going to take a closer look at the basic unit of life; cells.

When I was at UVic, my professor showed our first year Biology class this video and it sparked my interest in cell biology. As I watched the video I barely knew what was going on but the I was captivated by how much goes on in our cells.

As years went by I would come back and revisit this video and the more I watched it, the more I started to see what was really going on because we were learning about everything in my cell bio courses (my personal favorite are the kinesins!)

Below is a link to one of the original creators of this amazing clip, David Bolinsky's, TED talk he gave after he released this video through Harvard.

See you all in class tomorrow,

Ms Hari

Friday, February 26th

Happy Friday, everyone!

Thank you so much for all your hard work this week. The Unit 2 test is on Tuesday, March 1st and Monday will be a review day. Please come to class with questions and I will clarify everything!

Today:
We started off the class talking about chromosomal mutations. You will have an opportunity to answer the mutation article questions in class on Monday as well.

Next, we talked about genetic engineering and rDNA. Click on this link to view an animation.

Homework for the weekend:

* Study, study, study! I would suggest watching the vodcasts once more to make sure you completely understand DNA replication and protein synthesis. Know your terms/definitions!

* Complete Unit 2 workbook questions. Answers can be checked here.

* Fun with DNA- I handed this out to several of you....you must know how to go from DNA to mRNA to amino acids for the test (you will need your mRNA codon tables for this).

* Quizlet- see the Quizlet tab for link and info.

See you all on Monday,

Ms Hari
